How To Reach North Vanlaiphai

Chhingpuii Thlan, Mizoram, India
North Vanlaiphai is one of the largest and most historically significant villages in Mizoram, situated at an altitude of about 5,000 feet. It gained prominence during World War II when it was bombed by the Japanese air force in 1944, making it one of the few places in Mizoram to have directly exper ienced the global conflict. The village is also famous for being the site of the first British outpost in the region, established in 1892. Beyond its military history, North Vanlaiphai is known for its stunning natural beauty, surrounded by the Purun and Lungreng hills. The village is a center for wet-rice cultivation, featuring vast, picturesque paddy fields that turn golden during the harvest season. It is also the birthplace of legendary Mizo figures, including famous wrestlers and community leaders. The culture here is deeply rooted in the "Tlawmngaihna" code of conduct—selfless service to others. A visit to North Vanlaiphai offers a mix of historical exploration, with its old colonial buildings and war-time stories, and serene nature walks through its expansive valley. The local Presbyterian Church, over a century old, is a landmark of architectural and spiritual importance. The village represents the transition of Mizoram from a land of independent chieftains to a modern state, all while maintaining its pristine environment and warm hospitality. It is a destination for those who want to see the "real" Mizoram, away from the urban bustle of Aizawl.:
