How To Reach Panch Pandav Tree

Khajjiar, Himachal Pradesh, India
The Panch Pandav Tree is a singular and majestic Deodar Cedar (Cedrus deodara) famed for its unique growth pattern. It is an extraordinary botanical marvel where a single, massive trunk splits into five distinct, large branches immediately above the base, making it appear as five individual trees gr owing harmoniously from one root. The term 'Panch' in Hindi means 'five'. Mythological Significance: The tree is named after the five heroic Pandava brothers (Yudhishthira, Bhima, Arjuna, Nakula, and Sahadeva) from the ancient Indian epic, the Mahabharata. Local folklore and legend suggest that the Pandavas, while in exile (Agyatvas), rested under this very tree. This mythological connection has imbued the tree with a profound spiritual and cultural significance, making it a sacred site for locals and an intriguing stop for tourists interested in history and legends. It symbolizes the unity and strength of the brothers. Botanical and Ecological Value: The Deodar Cedar is revered across Himachal Pradesh as the "Tree of the Gods" and is known for its incredible longevity, sometimes living for over a thousand years. The tree stands as a powerful testament to the resilience of nature in the high-altitude Himalayan ecosystem. Its location on the fringes of the Kalatop-Khajjiar Wildlife Sanctuary further emphasizes its ecological importance as a natural landmark and habitat for local bird species. Visitor Experience: The area around the tree is serene and quiet, offering a peaceful retreat from the main meadow's activities. Visitors typically stop to admire its unique structure, take photographs, and listen to the local guides recount the legendary tales of the Pandavas.

How to Reach

By Air (Flights): The nearest airport is Kangra Airport (Gaggal Airport - KGG), which is approximately 120 KMs away. Upon arrival, the best way to reach Khajjiar (and then the tree) is by a pre-booked taxi, a scenic drive lasting about 4-5 hours.

By Train (Rail Connectivity): The nearest major railway station is Pathankot Cantonment (PTKC), about 100 KMs from the tree's location. From Pathankot, you can hire a private cab directly, which takes about 3-4 hours. Alternatively, use the well-connected bus services to Dalhousie and then switch to a local shared taxi for the final leg of the journey to Khajjiar.

By Road (Bus/Taxi/Driving): The Panch Pandav Tree is located on the main road/path that leads from the Khajjiar Meadows towards the Kalatop Sanctuary and Lakkarmandi. It is only 1. 5 KMs from the center of the Khajjiar town area. It can be reached via a pleasant 20-30 minute walk from the main meadow. For those not wishing to walk, local taxis or shared cabs are easily available from the main meadow area. The drive from Dalhousie (25 KMs) or Chamba (23 KMs) is straightforward, and the tree is clearly signposted.

By Local Transport: The best way to reach the tree from the Khajjiar meadow is a comfortable walk through the initial forested area, allowing you to enjoy the fresh air and the deodar scent. Taxis for hire are available for a very short trip if mobility is a concern. The location is a common stop for local sightseeing tours organized by hotels.
