How To Reach Rajgad Fort

Pune, Maharashtra, India
Rajgad Fort, meaning "Royal Fort," holds immense historical prestige as it was the first capital of the Maratha Empire for over 25 years (from 1646 to 1672), before the capital was shifted to Raigad. It was originally called Murumdev, but Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj renamed it Rajgad after its thoro ugh fortification and expansion, utilizing the hidden treasure found at nearby Torna Fort. Situated at an altitude of 1,376 meters (4,514 feet), it is a massive and complex hill fort built around a central, conical citadel called the Balekilla (Small Fort), surrounded by three distinct spurs, or machis (outposts), named Padmavati Machi, Sanjivani Machi, and Suvela Machi. The fort’s unique design, featuring the centrally located Balekilla at the highest point, made it virtually impregnable and a perfect administrative center. This is where Shivaji Maharaj's son, Chhatrapati Rajaram, was born, and where Shivaji’s wife, Saibai, passed away and was interred. Due to the high strategic importance and complexity of the structure, Rajgad is considered a masterpiece of Maratha military architecture. Today, it stands as one of the most popular and challenging trekking destinations in the Pune district, attracting visitors with its compelling history and grand, sprawling ruins.

How to Reach

By Air (at least ): The nearest airport is Pune International Airport (PNQ), located about 75-80 KMS from Gunjavane village.

Steps
: From PNQ, hire a taxi and head towards Khadakwasla and the road leading to Velhe/Gunjavane. The total driving time is approximately 3 hours.

By Train: The nearest major railway station is Pune Junction (PUNE), about 60 KMS away.

Steps
: From Pune Junction, take an auto-rickshaw to the Swargate Bus Terminal. From Swargate, take a State Transport (MSRTC) bus towards Velhe or Gunjavane. The bus is the most reliable public transport. Gunjavane is the preferred base for the easiest ascent. If the bus stops at Velhe, you need to hire a local shared jeep or auto for the final 10 KMS to Gunjavane.

By Road: Rajgad is about 60 KMS from Pune.

Private/Self-Drive: This is the most efficient method, taking about 2 hours. The route is the same as Torna (via Khadakwasla and Pabe Ghat). Drive to the base village of Gunjavane, where paid parking is available. The roads are generally good up to the base.

Bus/Local Transport: Direct MSRTC buses from Swargate to Gunjavane are the best public option, but their frequency is low. You may need to catch a bus to Velhe and then a local shared vehicle (jeep/tempo) to Gunjavane village for the final stretch.

By Local Transport: Local shared jeeps or sumos regularly ferry trekkers between the larger villages like Velhe and the smaller fort base village of Gunjavane. This is the standard way to cover the last leg of the journey after arriving by bus. The trekking starts directly from Gunjavane after registration.
