How To Reach Shaniwar Wada

Pune, Maharashtra, India
Shaniwar Wada is a majestic fortress-palace located in the heart of Pune. Its foundation was laid in 1730 AD by Peshwa Bajirao I, the Prime Minister to the Maratha Chhatrapati (Shahu I). The name 'Shaniwar Wada' comes from 'Shaniwar' (Saturday), the day the foundation ceremony was performed, and 'Wa da' (a residential complex). It served as the administrative and residential capital of the Peshwa rulers of the Maratha Empire until 1818. Originally a seven-story structure constructed mainly from stone and teakwood, it symbolized the empire's power. Much of the original structure, particularly the interior, was tragically destroyed by a massive and mysterious fire in 1828, which burned for seven days. Today, visitors see the massive fortified walls, five magnificent gateways (most notably the Dilli Darwaja or Delhi Gate), nine bastions, and the extensive foundational remnants, including the famous lotus-shaped fountain (Hazari Karanje). The ruins still resonate with the stories of the Peshwas, including the legendary romance of Bajirao I and Mastani, and the dark tale of the young Peshwa Narayanrao's murder.

How to Reach

By Air: The nearest airport is Pune International Airport (PNQ), approximately 12-15 KMS away. From the airport, hire a pre-paid taxi, an app-based cab (Uber/Ola), or an auto-rickshaw directly to Shaniwar Wada. The drive takes about 45-60 minutes.

By Train: Pune Junction Railway Station (PUNE) is the main rail head, located just 3-4 KMS away. This is the fastest and most convenient way to reach the center of Pune. From the station, a short 10-15 minute auto-rickshaw ride or a quick cab journey will take you directly to the fort.

By Road (Inter-City): Pune is extremely well-connected by National Highways. State-run and private buses connect it to Mumbai (approx. 3-4 hours), Nashik, Kolhapur, and Hyderabad. The main bus terminus is the Shivajinagar Bus Stand, which is very close to the fort.

By Local Transport: Shaniwar Wada is centrally located. Use local PMPML buses, shared auto-rickshaws, or app-based taxis and auto services, which are widely available in the city. The fort is a landmark; any local driver will know the way.
