How To Reach Surajkund Mela Ground

Faridabad, Haryana, India
Overview of the Venue: Surajkund Mela Ground is the sprawling, dedicated venue located near the ancient Surajkund Lake in the backdrop of the Aravalli Hills. It is internationally famous for hosting the Surajkund International Crafts Mela, the largest crafts fair in the world, typically held every F ebruary. Although the ground is a permanent structure, its main significance is as the annual stage for this massive cultural event. The ground is spread over a vast area, covering approximately 40 acres, and is meticulously designed to recreate a traditional village setting, featuring about 1010 work huts built in a rural, ethnic style to host craftspersons and weavers from across India and the world. Cultural Significance and Conservation: The venue was initially developed in 1987 to serve the critical purpose of preserving and promoting the languishing arts, crafts, and handlooms of India, giving traditional craftspersons a vital platform to showcase and sell their work directly. Every year, a Theme State of India is selected, whose unique architecture, culture, and cuisine are showcased through specially constructed gates and the 'Apna Ghar' (Our Home) structure, which is meant to be a semi-permanent cultural exhibit. The site's architecture is, therefore, a dynamic display of India's diverse regional aesthetics, changing annually to reflect the Theme State's ethos, as seen in past gates like the Shekhawati Gate (Rajasthan) and Char Minar Gate (Andhra Pradesh).:
