Jambughoda Sanctuary

Dandi, Gujarat, India
Jambughoda Wildlife Sanctuary is a sprawling forest reserve that covers about 130 square kilometers of undulating hills and dense jungle. Established in 1990, it was once part of the princely state of Jambughoda. The sanctuary is primarily a Teak and Bamboo forest, providing a lush green canopy tha t is home to a wide variety of wildlife. The most prominent inhabitants are the Leopard, Sloth Bear, and Wild Boar. It is also a haven for bird enthusiasts, with numerous species like the Paradise Flycatcher and Golden Oriole flitting through the trees. The sanctuary features several water bodies, most notably the Kada Dam and Targol Dam, which serve as watering holes for the animals and scenic spots for visitors. The terrain is a mix of flat land and hillocks, making it suitable for both easy walks and more challenging treks. Unlike the more famous Gir National Park, Jambughoda offers a more intimate and quiet nature experience, free from massive crowds. There are eco-tourism campsites within the sanctuary, such as Dhanpuri and Bhat, where visitors can stay in basic tents or cottages to experience the forest at night. The forest is also significant for its tribal heritage, with several Rathwa tribal villages located on its fringes. These communities have a deep-rooted connection with the forest and their traditional wall paintings (Pithora) are a cultural highlight. The sanctuary acts as a vital corridor for wildlife moving between the hills of Panchmahal and Chhota Udepur. It is a perfect destination for those looking to disconnect from digital life and reconnect with the raw beauty of nature. The silence of the forest is only broken by the calls of the wild, providing a truly immersive experience.
