Jessore Sloth Bear Sanctuary

Palanpur, Gujarat, India
Jessore Sloth Bear Sanctuary is a sprawling ecological haven spread over 180 square kilometers in the Aravalli hills. Established in 1978, it was primarily designed to protect the endangered sloth bear, which finds a perfect habitat in the caves and dry deciduous forests here. The sanctuary include s Jessore Hill, the second-highest peak in Gujarat, offering a unique microclimate. Beyond bears, the park is home to leopards, hyenas, and a variety of migratory birds. The terrain is a mix of rocky outcrops and dense scrub, making it a favorite for eco-tourists and trekkers. The presence of the Kedarnath Mahadev temple within its boundaries adds a spiritual dimension to the wildlife experience. Visitors can enjoy the silence of the forest, occasionally broken by the calls of the grey jungle fowl. It serves as a vital corridor between the desert and the forest ecosystems. Exploring the sanctuary requires a permit and often a guide to navigate the bear-prone zones safely.
