Kalga Village

Manikaran, Himachal Pradesh, India
Kalga is a tiny, picturesque hamlet that feels like a place frozen in time. Known for its vast apple orchards and traditional wooden houses, it offers a quieter alternative to the more crowded Tosh or Kasol. The village is unique because there are no shops or commercial streets; instead, the houses are scattered among the trees, connected by narrow mud paths. Most of the old wooden homes have been converted into cozy homestays that cater to backpackers looking for a long-term stay. The atmosphere is incredibly laid-back, with travelers often spending their days reading, painting, or simply staring at the mountains. From Kalga, you get a magnificent view of the Barshaini dam and the peaks leading towards Kheerganga. The village is surrounded by thick forests of pine and deodar, making the air incredibly fresh. It is often the first stop for those who want a head start on the trek to the hot springs. The locals are mostly farmers, and life revolves around the seasons of apple harvesting. During the winter, the village gets covered in deep snow, turning it into a silent, white paradise. There are no motorable roads inside the village, ensuring that the only sounds you hear are nature's own. It is a perfect destination for those who want to "disappear" for a few days and live a simple, mountain life.
