Kigga

Sringeri, Karnataka, India
The village of Kigga is famous for the Rishyasringeshwara Temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva and the sage Rishyasringa, the son of Vibhandaka. Legend from the Ramayana says that Rishyasringa was born with a horn (Shrunga) on his head and was instrumental in performing the Putrakameshti Yaga for King Da sharatha, which resulted in the birth of Lord Rama and his brothers. After the Yaga, the sage returned to this spot, which was then called Shrunga-giri (now Sringeri), and performed penance. The Shiva Linga in the sanctum is unique, said to have a small horn-like projection, representing the union of Lord Shiva and the sage Rishyasringa, who was absorbed into the Lingam here. The temple is believed to have the power to avert famine and bring abundant rainfall, a belief stemming from the sage's association with bringing rain to King Romapada's kingdom. The peaceful environment, surrounded by the dense forests of the Western Ghats, makes it a perfect spiritual retreat.

Its Deep Ramayana Connection: The temple is famous for its direct link to the Ramayana through the sage Rishyasringa. The unique horn-like projection on the Shiva Lingam is a powerful symbol of this legend and the union of the sage with Lord Shiva. This mythological significance draws pilgrims seeking a connection to the ancient Hindu epics.

The Power to Bring Rain: A strong local belief is that proper worship at this temple can bring rain and avert drought, making it a critical pilgrimage center for farmers and the local community, especially during times of erratic monsoon. A Unique Blend of Ancient and Regional Style: The temple is ancient, with inscriptions dating back to the 7th century, suggesting a long history of worship. The current structure exhibits a simple, traditional Malnad temple style, focused more on the sanctity of the Lingam than intricate external carvings.

The Sanctum and the Unique Linga: The Garbhagriha (sanctum sanctorum) houses the very unique Shiva Lingam with the horn-like projection, which is the main architectural and religious focal point. The Linga is shaped somewhat like a Rudraksha bead. The temple is of modest scale but uses strong, traditional materials.

The Navaranga and Sculpted Pillars: The Navaranga (pillared hall) is approached by three entrances and features four beautifully carved pillars. One pillar is famous for its graceful carvings of dancers, representing the palanquin in which the sage was carried. The overall structure is compact, reflecting its ancient, rural origins. The dimensions are functional, suitable for the rural setting, but the stone carving details in the Mandapa are noteworthy.
