Kodumon Chilanthiyambalam

Pathanamthitta, Kerala, India
Mythical Healing at Kodumon: The Kodumon Chilanthiyambalam, officially known as the Palliyara Sree Bhagavathy Temple, is perhaps the only temple in the world dedicated to a spider deity. It is deeply believed that the water from the temple's well, the Chilanthikinar, has miraculous powers to cure sk in diseases and toxins caused by spider bites. The deity worshipped here is Mahalakshmi, but the local folklore associates the temple with the last king of the Sakthibhadra dynasty who was a great devotee. Legend has it that a spider once protected the king's family, leading to the construction of this unique shrine. Thousands of devotees visit every year, not just for religious reasons but to seek relief from chronic skin ailments that modern medicine sometimes fails to address. The temple is located in the peaceful village of Kodumon, which is also the birthplace of the famous 9th-century Sanskrit poet Sakthibhadra. This historical connection adds a layer of literary significance to the site, making it a point of interest for historians. The atmosphere is quiet and contemplative, providing a stark contrast to the bustling town of Pathanamthitta just a few kilometers away.
