The Kondana Caves offer a captivating journey into India's rich Buddhist heritage, dating back to the 1st century BCE. This group of 16 rock-cut caves served as a significant monastic complex for Hinayana Buddhist monks, providing shelter and a place for meditation. What makes these caves particula rly intriguing is their intricate construction and the clear evidence of early wooden architectural patterns that were later mimicked in stone. The main cave, a Chaitya (prayer hall), is impressively large, featuring a stupa (a dome-shaped structure containing relics) and remnants of columns that once adorned its interior.
