Malampuzha Dam & Gardens

Palakkad, Kerala, India
Malampuzha Dam is the largest reservoir in Kerala, located on the foothills of the Western Ghats. Completed in 1955, it is a combined masonry and earth dam that serves as a major irrigation source for the "Rice Bowl of Kerala." The dam is surrounded by beautifully landscaped gardens, which have ear ned it the nickname "Vrindavan of Kerala." These gardens feature manicured lawns, vibrant flower beds, and several artistic fountains that are illuminated in the evening. One of the main attractions within the garden is the massive Yakshi statue, sculpted by the renowned artist Kanayi Kunhiraman. This statue is considered a masterpiece of modern Indian sculpture. The garden also houses the first rock garden in South India, designed by Nek Chand, the creator of the famous Chandigarh Rock Garden. It is made entirely from recycled materials like broken bangles, tiles, and plastic bottles. For children, there is an amusement park, a toy train, and a dedicated play area. The reservoir offers boating facilities, including pedal boats and motorboats, allowing visitors to enjoy the vastness of the water body. A snake park and a fish-shaped aquarium are also located nearby, providing educational entertainment. The dam itself offers a stunning walk along its crest, providing views of the mountains on one side and the gardens on the other. It is the most popular picnic spot for families in North Kerala. During the weekends, the area buzzes with activity and local vendors. The cool breeze from the mountains makes it a pleasant escape throughout the year. The gardens are particularly famous for their rose collection, featuring hundreds of varieties. Visiting Malampuzha is a complete package of nature, art, and adventure.:
