Murudeshwar Temple is a magnificent pilgrimage site dedicated to Lord Shiva, located on the scenic Kanduka Hill. The temple is world-renowned for its massive 123-foot tall Shiva statue, which is the second tallest in the world. The history of the temple is deeply rooted in the Ramayana era; it is b elieved that the Atma Linga (Soul of Shiva) given to Ravana was broken into pieces, and one such piece fell here. The temple complex has been modernised by philanthropist R.N. Shetty, transforming it into a global tourist landmark. One of the most striking features is the Raja Gopura, a 20-story gateway tower that stands at 237 feet, making it one of the tallest in the world. Visitors can take an elevator to the 18th floor of this tower for a breathtaking view of the Shiva statue against the backdrop of the Arabian Sea. The main deity, Lord Murudeshwara, is worshipped in the form of a Linga placed below the ground level in the sanctum sanctorum. The complex also features numerous life-sized statues depicting scenes from Hindu mythology, such as Arjuna receiving the Gita from Lord Krishna.
