Panchet Dam

Dhanbad, Jharkhand, India
General Overview: Panchet Dam is the last of the four multi-purpose dams constructed under the Damodar Valley Corporation. Built across the Damodar River, it stands as a colossal structure at the foot of the Panchet Hill. The dam marks the boundary between the districts of Dhanbad in Jharkhand and P urulia in West Bengal. It was inaugurated in 1959 and has since been a pivotal site for irrigation, flood control, and power generation. The surrounding landscape is dominated by the towering Panchet Hill, which provides a dramatic backdrop to the vast reservoir. The area is particularly famous as a picnic spot during the winter season, drawing crowds from both neighboring states. Unlike Maithon, Panchet has a more rugged and raw natural beauty, with deep forests flanking the water body. It also carries historical weight, as the construction led to the submergence of many ancient sites, including parts of the Telkupi kingdom.

Earthen and Concrete Fusion: Panchet Dam is an earthen dam with a concrete spillway, showcasing robust industrial architecture. The dam has a total length of 6,777 meters (22,234 feet) and a height of about 45 meters (148 feet) above the river bed. The spillway is equipped with 15 crest gates that manage the water levels of the Damodar. The catchment area of the reservoir is approximately 10,961 square kilometers. The power house located here has a capacity of 40 MW, contributing significantly to the regional grid. The design incorporates a wide road on top of the dam, allowing for vehicular movement and pedestrian walks. The massive concrete piers and the rhythmic arrangement of the gates give it a powerful, geometric aesthetic that is a marvel to behold.
