Legacy and Role: The Central Research Institute (CRI) in Kasauli is a landmark institution with a monumental history, having been established in 1904 under the direction of Sir David Semple. It was originally known as the Pasteur Institute of India. Its foundation was crucial for public health in co lonial and independent India, focusing on immunology and virology research. The CRI quickly became a major facility for producing vital vaccines and antisera. It has a global role, functioning as a World Health Organization (WHO) Collaborating Centre. It is famous for its pioneering work, including the production of vaccines for diseases like measles, polio, and the DTP group (Diphtheria, Tetanus, Pertussis). The tranquil, high-altitude setting was chosen partly for its isolated, clean environment, ideal for biological research. Today, while primarily a research and manufacturing facility, it is also a site of historical significance and offers limited public access, often for educational purposes. It also runs an accredited Master of Science program in Microbiology, maintaining its status as a premier educational and research facility in India. (400 words)
