The Madhab Pukhuri is a large, square-shaped pond considered holy by devotees who visit the adjacent Hayagriva Madhava Temple. The name Madhab Pukhuri literally means Madhava's Pond, referring to Lord Hayagriva Madhava, a form of Vishnu with a horse's head, to whom the nearby temple is dedicated. Th e pond is believed to have existed since the time the original temple structure was built, giving it immense historical and religious significance. The water body plays a crucial role in the local ecosystem and culture. It is famously home to a substantial population of black softshell turtles (Nilssonia nigricans), an extremely rare and critically endangered species. Locals and conservationists are actively working to protect these creatures, and the pond serves as one of the last natural habitats for these turtles in the region. Visitors often feed the turtles with biscuits, bread, and fruits, which is a key part of the experience, though it's important to be mindful of the environmental impact of non-natural food.
