It was a vita l hub for the spice trade, specifically pepper, which earned its builder, Queen Chennabhairadevi, the title of the Pepper Queen. The fort’s history is a blend of various dynasties, including the Vijayanagara Empire, the Bijapur Sultanate, and later the Marathas and the British.
