The Nityanandashram Caves are a remarkable and unique site located near Kanhangad. This ashram was founded by the revered sage Bhagwan Nityananda (often referred to as Bade Baba) in the early 20th century. The centerpiece and major draw of the ashram is the complex network of 45 man-made caves, whic h were painstakingly carved out of a single, massive laterite hillock by the Swami himself. These caves were designed and used for meditation (Dhyana) and spiritual retreat. The legend surrounding their construction speaks of the Swami's miraculous abilities in obtaining the funds needed to pay the workers, defying the skepticism of the British authorities of the time. The caves are not only a spiritual sanctuary but also an engineering marvel, as they were carved with minimal tools from the challenging local rock. The site today is a significant pilgrimage center, attracting followers of Swami Nityananda and visitors seeking peace and introspection. The ashram complex, set on a picturesque hill, also houses a beautiful temple with a life-size statue of the sitting Swami, made of panchaloha (a traditional alloy of five metals). The tranquil, lush green surroundings and the serene atmosphere of the ashram make it an ideal place for spiritual contemplation, yoga, and a quiet break from busy life. The sheer number and complexity of the caves, each varying in size and possibly having a specific spiritual significance (some believe they represent spiritual chakras or cosmic elements), continue to fascinate devotees and architects alike.
