Pranahita Wildlife Sanctuary

Adilabad, Telangana, India
Pranahita Wildlife Sanctuary is a precious ecological zone located on the banks of the Pranahita river, a major tributary of the Godavari. Established in 1980, this sanctuary covers an area of approximately 136 square kilometers and is part of the prehistoric Deccan plateau. The landscape is charac terized by dry deciduous teak forests, undulating hilly terrains, and vast grasslands that provide a perfect habitat for various wild animals. It is most famous for being the home of the Blackbuck, the state animal of Andhra Pradesh (and now significant in Telangana). Apart from blackbucks, the sanctuary shelters leopards, sloth bears, wild dogs, forest cats, and various species of deer. The Pranahita river not only provides a perennial water source but also adds to the scenic beauty of the sanctuary, especially during sunrise. The area is also a treasure trove for paleontologists, as several fossils have been discovered in the rock formations here. The sanctuary is part of a larger ecological corridor that connects with forests in Maharashtra, allowing for the natural movement of animals. Visitors can experience the thrill of a jeep safari through the dense forest, offering a chance to spot rare birds and mammals in their natural surroundings. The diversity of birdlife here is impressive, with over 50 species including herons, teals, and strokes. It is an ideal destination for those who love quietude and the raw beauty of the Indian wilderness. The forest department manages a few rest houses for those who wish to stay overnight and experience the jungle at dawn.
