Pretshila Hill Temple

Gaya, Bihar, India:
The Hill of Ancestral Liberation (400 words): Pretshila Hill, meaning 'Hill of Spirits,' is one of the most vital sites in the Gaya pilgrimage circuit for Pind Daan. It is located about 8 KMS northwest of the city center. The temple at the summit is dedicated to Lord Yama (the God of Death and Justi ce) and is believed to have been built by the renowned Maratha Queen Ahilya Bai Holkar in the 18th century. According to the Garuda Purana, performing Pind Daan at Pretshila is especially potent, granting liberation (Moksha) to the souls of ancestors who may have become 'preta' (spirits/ghosts). The ritual is performed after a dip in the nearby Brahma Kund. Legend states that Lord Rama and Sita also performed Shraddha for King Dasharatha here. The climb is accessed by a flight of stone steps. The summit offers a commanding and beautiful view of the surrounding landscape. The atmosphere is solemn and spiritual, dedicated entirely to the memory and peace of the departed. The site features the sacred Ramkund Tank and the Brahma Kund at its base.

Lord Yama Temple: It is famous for housing the temple dedicated to Lord Yama () This is unique among pilgrimage sites, highlighting its role as the gate to the spiritual realm (Pretalok). Its primary fame rests on the belief that performing Pind Daan here guarantees the release of ancestors' souls from the cycle of rebirth, even if they had become restless spirits (preta). The historic patronage of Queen Ahilya Bai Holkar also adds to its recognition. The beautiful view from the summit is an added draw, giving it fame as a scenic spiritual spot.

Maratha and Local Style () The temple on the summit, built by Queen Ahilya Bai Holkar, primarily exhibits the Maratha style of architecture, blending into the local stone construction traditions. The temple is built of stone blocks and features a typical Shikhara (spire) over the main sanctum. Its dimensions are relatively modest, with the focus being the sanctity of the location rather than architectural extravagance. A key architectural feature at the base is the Brahma Kund, a square or rectangular stepped tank where pilgrims take a holy dip. The entire structure is functional, designed to withstand the hilltop location. The Ramkund, also a sacred tank, is near the summit. The ascent is defined by a long, well-maintained set of stone steps carved into the hillside.
