Radhanagari Dam

Kolhapur, Maharashtra, India
Built by Rajarshi Shahu Maharaj in 1907, this is one of the oldest dams in India. It is constructed across the Bhogawati river and is an engineering marvel known for its unique automatic gates. When the water level reaches the maximum capacity, these gates open without any electricity or human inte rvention. The dam is nestled within the Radhanagari Wildlife Sanctuary, a UNESCO World Heritage site known for its population of the Indian Bison (Gava). The surrounding area is a dense forest filled with diverse flora and fauna. It serves as a vital source of water for irrigation and hydro-electric power for the entire Kolhapur district, symbolizing the visionary governance of the Maharajah.
