Dhulikatta is an archaeological treasure trove, a place where history lies buried just beneath the surface. This ancient site, located on the banks of a picturesque rivulet, is home to a magnificent Buddhist Mahastupa and Vihara dating back to the 2nd century BCE, placing it in the golden era of the Satavahana dynasty. The excavations at Dhulikatta have been instrumental in unraveling the rich historical and spiritual heritage of the region. The site is believed to be one of the 30 fortified cities mentioned by the Greek historian Megasthenes in his ancient accounts, a testament to its once-prominent status as a trade and cultural hub. The name "Dhulikatta" is said to be a corruption of "Dhulikota," meaning "mud fort," referring to the mud fort that protected the ancient city. The excavations have brought to light a wealth of artifacts, including coins, pottery, and seals from the Roman and Satavahana periods, indicating flourishing trade relations. The Mahastupa, constructed with lightweight bricks and embellished with sculpted limestone slabs, is the centerpiece of the site. It is a powerful symbol of the spread of Buddhism in South India. Unfortunately, due to a lack of proper preservation, the site is in a state of neglect, with many artifacts having been moved to a museum. However, its historical significance remains immense.
