Mahuli Fort is a historical marvel located in the Thane district of Maharashtra, standing at a majestic height of 2815 feet above sea level. It is famously known as the highest point in Thane, offering a breathtaking panoramic view of the surrounding Sahyadri mountain ranges. The fort complex actua lly consists of a group of three hills namely Mahuli, Bhandargad, and Palasgad, which are connected by common cols and ridges. Historically, the fort has seen many rulers, including the Mughals, the Nizams, and the Marathas, and it played a crucial role in the military strategies of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. In the year 1658, Shivaji Maharaj captured this fort from the Mughals, though it changed hands multiple times thereafter through various treaties and battles. Today, the entire mountain range is a protected monument under the Archaeological Survey of India and is part of the Tansa Wildlife Sanctuary. The trek to the top is considered a paradise for rock climbers and trekkers due to its complex rock pinnacles like Navra, Narvi, and Karavli. The dense forest at the base is home to diverse flora and fauna, occasionally even reporting leopard sightings, making it a thrilling destination for nature lovers. At the summit, visitors can find ancient caves, a Shiva temple, and cisterns of water that once served the garrison. The trek usually starts from the Mahuli base village and takes about 3 to 4 hours of steady climbing to reach the top. The trail is well-marked with arrows, passing through lush green jungles, rocky patches, and an iron ladder that helps trekkers cross a steep rock face. During the monsoon, the entire region transforms into a verdant paradise with several seasonal waterfalls cascading down the cliffs. It is a perfect spot for those seeking adventure, history, and a touch of wilderness away from the urban chaos.
