Ghodbunder Fort
Ghodbunder Fort is a historic hill fort situated on a strategic hilltop south of the Ulhas River, offering commanding views of the Thane Creek and the Arabian Sea. The name "Ghodbunder" is derived from 'Ghod' (horse) and 'Bunder' (port), indicating its past role as a crucial horse trading port, par ticularly under the Portuguese. Originally built by the Portuguese in the 16th century, it was later captured by the Marathas under Chimaji Appa in 1737, and then occupied by the British who used it as a district headquarters. The fort's ruins reflect this complex history, featuring a blend of European and Maratha military architecture. Today, it is managed by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) and is undergoing restoration, making it a significant site for history buffs and a popular spot for trekking and photography.
