Dumna Nature Reserve Park is an expansive and protected ecotourism site covering nearly 1800 acres (7.3 square kilometers) of lush, forested land, providing a crucial green lung and biodiversity hotspot for the city of Jabalpur. Managed by the Jabalpur Municipal Corporation, the reserve sits on a pl ateau about 40 meters above the main city, giving it a unique microclimate and scenic elevation. The forest type is predominantly dry deciduous, characteristic of Central Indian mixed forests, supporting a rich and diverse ecosystem that includes woodlands, grasslands, and significant wetlands. The reserve is a vital habitat for a large population of wildlife, notably nearly 2,000 deer (including Cheetal, Barking Deer, and the endangered Four-horned Antelope), Wild Boar, Jackals, Porcupines, and even a resident population of Leopards. Beyond mammals, it is an absolute paradise for birdwatchers, with over 300 recorded species, including a substantial number of migrant birds that visit during the winter and summer months. The park also encompasses the historic Khandari Dam, built in 1883, which serves as an important catchment area and offers beautiful reservoir views and recreational facilities like boating. Established initially to protect the catchment area for the Khandari Lake, the park has evolved into a comprehensive nature education and recreation center. Attractions within the park include a small toy train ride, a hanging bridge, designated rest areas, and nature trails, ensuring a blend of conservation, education, and entertainment. The proximity to the Jabalpur Airport makes it a very accessible escape, offering an authentic wilderness experience mere minutes from the urban center.
