Jivaka's Mango Garden, also known by its Pali name Jivakameavan Vihara, is an immensely significant ancient Buddhist archaeological site in Rajgir. It was originally a mango orchard gifted to the Buddhist Sangha by Jivaka, the renowned royal physician who served King Bimbisara and was a contemporary of Lord Buddha. Jivaka constructed an early monastery (vihara) and a sanatorium on this land, which is historically famous as the place where Lord Buddha was treated after he sustained an injury, allegedly at the hands of his jealous cousin, Devadatta. This makes the garden a pivotal site in the history of medicine and early monasticism in India. The ruins are primarily the foundations of the ancient monastery, which is notable for its unique oblong communal halls (dormitories), a style very different from later quadrangular viharas. The site dates back to the 6th-5th century BCE and is one of the earliest known monastic complexes in the country. Today, the garden is a tranquil, peaceful spot marked by these low-lying brick and rubble foundations, offering a strong, tangible link to the Buddha's physical life and the development of the early Buddhist monastic order. It is an essential stop for pilgrims and archaeologists alike, appreciating its dual significance in religion and history.
