Baraila Lake

Vaishali, Bihar, India
The Baraila Lake Salim Ali-Jubba Sahni Bird Sanctuary is a sprawling freshwater wetland covering approximately 1.96 square kilometers. Named after the legendary ornithologist Dr. Salim Ali and freedom fighter Jubba Sahni, this sanctuary is a vital ecosystem for both local and migratory birds. The l ake is fed by local rivers like the Noon and eventually drains into the Budhi Gandak. It hosts over 106 species of resident birds and about 59 species of migratory birds that arrive from as far as Siberia and Central Asia during the winter months. The marshy landscape is dotted with aquatic plants like Hydrilla and Typha, providing a perfect nesting ground. For nature lovers and researchers, Baraila Lake offers a unique opportunity to witness the biodiversity of the Gangetic plains in an undisturbed setting. The sanctuary plays a crucial role in maintaining the local groundwater levels and supporting the livelihoods of nearby fishing communities. :
