Sangam Mahuli & Kshetra Mahuli

Satara, Maharashtra, India
Spiritual and Historical Confluence:The twin villages of Sangam Mahuli and Kshetra Mahuli are renowned as one of the most sacred pilgrimage spots in the Satara district, located at the confluence (Sangam) of the holy rivers Krishna and Venna. This area, often referred to as Dakshin Kashi (Kashi of t he South), is historically significant as the birthplace of Ramshastri Prabhune, the famous spiritual and political adviser of Peshva Madhavrav. The location was also the scene of a crucial meeting between the last Peshva Bajirav and Sir John Malcolm just before the Anglo-Maratha War. The complex features two main temple groupings: Vishweshwar Temple and Sangameshwar Temple on the Sangam Mahuli side, and Rameshwar Temple and Someshwar Temple on the Kshetra Mahuli side.

Temple Architecture (Hemadpanthi and Nagara Style)The temples here represent a mix of architectural styles, primarily Hemadpanthi and Nagara styles, dating back to the 18th and 19th centuries under the Maratha patronage.

Key Architectural Elements:The Sri Kashi Vishweshwar Temple (on the Sangam Mahuli side, built in 1735 CE by Shripatrao Pant Pratinidhi) is constructed in the Hemadpanth style using basalt stone, featuring a Sabhamandap (assembly hall), an Antarala (vestibule), and a Garbhagriha (sanctum sanctorum). It measures about 50 feet in length and 20 feet in breadth. The walls have niches with idols of Lord Ganesha and Goddess Parvati. The Rameshwar Temple (on the Kshetra Mahuli side) is smaller, dedicated to Lord Shiva, and features a tiered Nagara-style Shikhara built with brick and lime. A notable architectural element is a 60-foot tall lamp-post carved out of a single stone.
