Skandagiri
Skandagiri, also known as Kalavara Durga, is one of the most famous trekking destinations in Karnataka. It is situated at an altitude of 1450 meters and is renowned for its "sea of clouds" phenomenon at sunrise. The hill was once home to a majestic fort built by local chieftains and later strengthe ned by Tipu Sultan. After the Anglo-Mysore wars, the fort fell into ruins, but the stone walls and gateways still stand as a testament to its history. The trek is approximately 8 KMS long (both ways) and is considered moderate to difficult. It starts from the Papagni Mutt near Kalavara village. The trail passes through dense shrubbery and steep rocky patches. At the summit, there are ruins of the fort and an ancient Shiva temple. The view from the top is breathtaking, especially in the early hours when the mist covers the entire valley below. Many trekkers aim to reach the top before dawn to witness the spectacular sunrise. The forest department manages the entry, and bookings must be made online. The area is rich in history and offers a perfect blend of adventure and scenic beauty. It is a part of the Nandi Hills range and overlooks other peaks like Channagiri and Nandi Hills. The cool breeze and the mystical atmosphere make it a favorite for weekend travelers from Bangalore.
