Travel Tips Of Mawphlang Sacred Forest

Mairang, Meghalaya, India
Mawphlang Sacred Forest, also known as Law Kyntang, is one of the most remarkable and spiritually significant sites in Meghalaya. Spanning about 192 Acres, this ancient grove has been preserved for over 800 years by the local Blah clan. The forest is governed by a strict local law: "Nothing can be taken out of this forest." According to local legend, anyone who removes even a leaf or a stone from the grove will face the wrath of the protecting deity, Labasa, who often takes the form of a tiger or leopard. This belief has effectively conserved a massive variety of flora and fauna that have disappeared elsewhere. Walking through the forest feels like stepping into a different era. The canopy is so dense that very little sunlight reaches the moss-covered ground. The air is thick with the scent of ancient earth and decaying leaves. The forest serves as a biodiversity hotspot, housing medicinal plants, orchids, and trees that are centuries old. It is not just a forest but a living museum of Khasi mythology and environmental ethics. The local guides, who are members of the community, provide deep insights into the rituals that still take place at the stone altars hidden deep within the trees. The forest is a testament to the symbiotic relationship between the Khasi people and nature, offering a profound sense of peace and mystery to every visitor who enters with respect.:

Tourism Tips

Health & Safety: Do not touch the ritual altars or remove any biological matter to respect local customs.

Packing: Wear salt-proof socks or carry salt to deal with leeches during the rainy season.
