Weather And Best Time To Visit In Ladakh
Weather and Best Time to Visit
Summer Season (April to June): This is the most popular time to visit as the weather is pleasant and most of the roads are open. During the day, temperatures range between 15°C and 25°C, making it comfortable for sightseeing. The snow on the high passes starts to melt, allowing access to the Nubra Valley and Pangong Tso. This is also the time for the Hemis Festival, which is a major cultural highlight. The sky remains clear, and the valleys start to turn green with new growth.
It is the peak tourist season, so expect crowds at the major attractions.Monsoon Season (July to September): Ladakh falls in a rain-shadow area, so it does not experience heavy monsoon rains like the rest of India. However, the roads leading to Ladakh from Manali and Srinagar can be affected by landslides during this time. The weather within the valley remains cool and breezy, with occasional light showers. This is a great time for photography as the air is very clear and the colors are intense. Most of the festivals in the remote monasteries take place during these months.
By late September, the autumn colors start to appear, turning the trees into shades of gold and orange.Winter Season (October to March): This is the time for adventure seekers who want to experience the extreme cold and the Chadar Trek. Temperatures can drop to -30°C at night, and most of the hotels and roads are closed. Only the road to Leh by air remains operational throughout the winter. The landscape is covered in a thick blanket of snow, offering a magical and quiet experience. You can go on a Snow Leopard sighting expedition during these months. It is not recommended for families or first-time visitors due to the harsh conditions. Only a few homestays and specialized hotels remain open during this period.
