Yana Caves
Yana Caves are a unique geological and religious site nestled deep within the lush forests of the Western Ghats in the Uttara Kannada district. These caves are not traditional caverns but are instead two massive, crystalline-limestone rock monoliths that tower over the surrounding jungle. The two m ain peaks are known as Bhairaveshwara Shikhara and Mohini Shikhara. Legend has it that the demon king Bhasmasura was turned into ashes here by Lord Vishnu in the form of the beautiful dancer Mohini, which explains the blackened color of the rocks. The site is a popular pilgrimage destination, with a self-manifested Shiva Linga located in a cave at the base of the taller peak. A unique feature is the water that naturally drips from the cave ceiling onto the Linga throughout the year. Reaching the caves requires a moderate trek of about 0.5 to 2 kilometers through a dense canopy of trees, offering a true jungle adventure. The air here is noticeably cooler and the environment is filled with the sounds of chirping birds and flowing streams. Yana is recognized as a biodiversity hotspot and a geological wonder due to the rare karst rock formations that are millions of years old. The site remains largely underdeveloped, preserving its mystical and primitive charm. It is a place where nature's power and ancient mythology seamlessly blend into one. :
