Aam Khas Bagh, Sirhind

Sangrur India, Punjab, India
Aam Khas Bagh is a historical rest house and garden complex located in the ancient town of Sirhind, near Fatehgarh Sahib. This monument is a remarkable remnant of the Mughal era, serving as a highway inn for both royalty and commoners traveling between Delhi and Lahore. The name "Aam Khas Bagh" lite rally translates to "Garden for the Commoners and the Royals," reflecting its dual purpose. The complex was initially built by Mughal Emperor Akbar and was later rebuilt and expanded by Emperor Shah Jahan. The Royal family, particularly Shah Jahan, would often stay here on their journeys, utilizing the special 'Khas' (private) section, while the 'Aam' (common) section was open to the public. The historical significance of Aam Khas Bagh is immense. It was a crucial stop on the Grand Trunk Road, a lifeline for trade and travel during the Mughal period. The complex was designed not only for rest but also as a symbol of imperial power and architectural sophistication. It was famous for its advanced air-conditioning system, known as 'Sarad Khana', a marvel of engineering for its time. This system used a network of underground channels to circulate water through the walls and fountains, providing a cool and comfortable environment even in the hot summer months. The complex, though now in ruins, still holds a certain majesty. It is spread over a large area and once included palaces, a hammam (bathhouse), a tank, and a beautiful garden. The ruins tell a tale of grand architecture and thoughtful planning. The Daulat Khana-e-Khas, the private residence of Shah Jahan, and the Sheesh Mahal (Palace of Mirrors) were once the most magnificent structures within the complex, adorned with intricate designs and glazed tiles. The garden itself was a classic Mughal design, with symmetrical layouts, fountains, and a variety of plants.Unfortunately, the Aam Khas Bagh suffered extensive damage during the numerous wars between the Mughals and the Sikh forces in the 18th century. Many of its structures were destroyed, and the water channels were filled with earth. The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) now maintains the ruins, trying to preserve what remains of this once-glorious monument. The site now serves as a place for historical reflection, where visitors can walk through the remains and imagine the grandeur of a bygone era. A light and sound show is sometimes held here to narrate the story of the monument and its historical context.
