Bordowa Than

Nagaon, Assam, India
Bordowa Than, also known as Batadrava Than, is the spiritual heart of Assam. It is the birthplace of Srimanta Sankardeva, the 15th-century saint-scholar and social reformer who founded the Neo-Vaishnavite movement. Established in 1468, it is the first Satra (monastery) ever built. The site is a vas t complex dedicated to the worship of Lord Krishna through "Ekasarana Nama Dharma." Unlike traditional temples, the focus here is on the Kirtan Ghar (prayer hall), where the holy book Bhagavata is placed on a throne (Guru Asana) instead of an idol. It serves as a center for art, music, and the famous Sattriya dance, which is one of India's classical dances.
