Pokhi Tirtha / Samaguri Beel
Samaguri Beel, popularly known as Pokhi Tirtha (Bird Pilgrimage), is a large ox-bow lake formed by the abandoned course of the Kolong River. This wetland is a paradise for bird lovers and nature enthusiasts, covering a significant area near Samaguri. Every winter, thousands of migratory birds fly f rom as far as Siberia and Europe to make this lake their temporary home. Species such as the Lesser Whistling Duck, Fulvous Whistling Duck, and Ferruginous Pochard are commonly spotted here. The lake is surrounded by lush green tea gardens and local villages, providing a picturesque rural setting. Apart from its ecological importance, the beel is a major source of livelihood for the local fishing community. Recent tourism developments have introduced boating and a water theme park nearby, making it a popular weekend getaway for families in Nagaon. The sight of hundreds of birds taking flight against the backdrop of the rising sun is a spiritual experience for many.
