Chabimura

Agartala, Tripura, India
Chabimura, also known as Devtamura, is an awe-inspiring site of rock-cut sculptures and carvings on the steep banks of the Gomati River. "Chabimura" translates to "a wall of images" in the local dialect. The colossal images, carved on the sheer rock face, are believed to be from the 15th to 16th cen turies. The sculptures depict a variety of deities from the Hindu pantheon, including Lord Shiva, Vishnu, and Goddess Durga. The most prominent and impressive carving is the magnificent statue of Mahishasura Mardini, the ten-armed Goddess Durga slaying the demon Mahishasura, which stands at an impressive height of about 20 feet. The site is a perfect blend of natural beauty and human artistry. To reach the carvings, one must take a boat ride on the Gomati River, which adds a sense of adventure to the journey. The boat ride through the lush green forests and the serene river with the towering rock face is a truly magical experience. Chabimura is a testament to the artistic skills and religious beliefs of the people of the region.
