In the winter of 1704, during the siege of Anandpur Sahib, the family of Guru Gobind Singh became separated. His mother, Mata Gujri, and his two youngest sons, aged nine and seven, were escorted by a trusted servant, Gangu, to his village. However, driven by greed, Gangu betrayed them and handed them over to the Mughal authorities. They were taken to Sirhind and brought before Nawab Wazir Khan, the governor. Wazir Khan, seeking to humiliate and break the spirit of the young Sahibzadas, offered them a choice: convert to Islam and live a life of luxury, or face a painful death. Despite their tender age, the two boys remained steadfast and resolute in their faith, refusing to renounce Sikhism. Their courage and defiance astonished even their captors. The story recounts how they were repeatedly tormented and subjected to psychological pressure, but their commitment to their heritage never wavered. Enraged by their unyielding defiance, Wazir Khan pronounced a horrific sentence: the Sahibzadas were to be bricked alive in a wall. As the wall rose around them, the boys remained calm, reciting their prayers and facing their fate with an extraordinary sense of courage. They were martyred on this very spot. The cruelty of this act is etched into the collective memory of the Sikh community. Upon hearing the news of her grandsons' martyrdom, their grandmother, Mata Gujri, who was imprisoned nearby in the Thanda Burj (Cold Tower), also passed away due to shock and grief, attaining martyrdom herself. The Gurudwara Shri Fatehgarh Sahib stands on this hallowed ground. The main shrine, located in the basement, marks the exact place where the Sahibzadas were bricked. The Gurudwara complex is a sprawling space, encompassing several other shrines and memorials. Gurudwara Bhora Sahib marks the exact spot of the martyrdom. The Gurudwara also houses a beautiful Sarovar (holy tank) where devotees can take a dip. The atmosphere is one of deep reverence and solemnity, with the quiet prayers of pilgrims echoing through the hallowed halls. The Jor Mela is a powerful display of faith and solidarity, transforming the mournful memory of the martyrdom into a celebration of courage and spiritual triumph. The city's name, Fatehgarh Sahib, which means "the fort of victory," was given to it by the Sikhs to symbolize their spiritual victory over tyranny.
