Gurudwara Shri Fatehgarh Sahib holds a profound and poignant place in the history of Sikhism. This sacred site marks the exact location where, in the bitter cold of December 1705, the two young boys, aged nine and seven respectively, were brutally bricked alive by the orders of Wazir Khan, the Mughal governor of Sirhind. Their crime was their unwavering refusal to renounce their faith and convert to Islam, a testament to their immense courage and dedication to their principles. The name "Fatehgarh" translates to "Fortress of Victory," symbolizing their moral and spiritual triumph over the tyranny and cruelty of their oppressors.The history of this place is intertwined with one of the most tragic episodes in Sikh history. After the Guru's family was separated during the evacuation of Anandpur Sahib, the younger sahibzadas and their grandmother, Mata Gujri, were betrayed by a former servant and handed over to the Mughals. They were imprisoned in the "Thanda Burj" (Cold Tower) of the Sirhind Fort, a place that was ironically designed to be a cool retreat in summer but was a chamber of immense suffering in the harsh winter. Wazir Khan, through various promises and threats, tried to persuade the boys to convert, but their resolve was unshakable. They stood firm, echoing the teachings of their father and their forefathers.The site is not just a single Gurudwara but a complex of several shrines, each with its own significant story. The main shrine, Gurudwara Bhora Sahib, is a basement structure that preserves the very wall in which the sahibzadas were walled up. This historical wall is a powerful and emotive relic, drawing pilgrims who stand in quiet reverence and contemplation. The main Gurudwara building, a majestic white edifice with a golden dome, was constructed over the site to honor their memory.Another critical component of the complex is Gurudwara Thanda Burj, located on the ground floor. This marks the site of the Cold Tower where Mata Gujri and her grandsons were held captive. It was here that Mata Gujri, upon hearing the news of her grandsons' martyrdom, collapsed and passed away. The location serves as a memorial to her own sacrifice and unwavering faith. The Gurudwara complex also includes Gurudwara Shaheed Ganj, which commemorates the numerous Sikhs who were martyred while fighting against the Mughal forces in the battles that followed.The site also honors a devout Jain merchant, Diwan Todar Mal, who, upon hearing of the martyrdom, took great personal risk to acquire land for the cremation of the three martyrs. The Faujdar of Sirhind, Wazir Khan, stipulated that the land would only be sold for as many gold coins as could cover the entire plot. Todar Mal, with immense devotion, bought the land by carpeting it with gold coins, an act of selfless service and unparalleled courage that is celebrated in Sikh history. The place of cremation is now marked by Gurudwara Jyoti Sarup Sahib, located about a kilometer away.The Gurudwara stands as a symbol of resilience, sacrifice, and the enduring spirit of Sikhism. It is a place of pilgrimage that attracts millions of devotees from all over the world, particularly during the annual Shaheedi Jor Mela, a three-day religious gathering held in December to commemorate the martyrdom.
