Garampani Wildlife Sanctuary

Diphu, Assam, India
Garampani Wildlife Sanctuary is one of the oldest and smallest sanctuaries in Assam, yet it is packed with biodiversity. The name "Garampani" means "Hot Water" in Assamese, referring to the natural thermal springs found within its boundaries. These springs are believed to have medicinal properties and are a major draw for tourists. The sanctuary is home to rare species like the Hoolock Gibbon and Golden Langur, which can often be heard calling from the canopy. Despite its small size of about 6 square kilometers, it acts as a vital corridor for elephants and other wildlife. The forest is a mix of semi-evergreen and tropical vegetation, providing a lush backdrop for the steaming springs. The sight of mist rising from the hot water amidst the green trees is truly magical, especially in the early morning. Visitors can walk along the designated paths to observe the bubbling water and the unique minerals that color the rocks around the springs. The sanctuary is also a paradise for birdwatchers, with over a hundred species of local and migratory birds. It offers a unique sensory experience—the smell of sulfur from the springs, the sound of the jungle, and the sight of rare primates. It is an essential stop for nature enthusiasts traveling between Diphu and Kaziranga.
