Gawilgarh Fort

Amravati, Maharashtra, India
Gawilgarh Fort is a majestic hill fortress that stands as a silent sentinel over the Chikhaldara hill station. Built in the 12th Century by a Gawli King and later fortified by the Bahmani Sultanate in 1425, it has witnessed numerous battles, including the famous siege by the British during the Seco nd Anglo-Maratha War in 1803. The fort is spread across two levels—the inner fort (Khasila) and the outer fort—divided by a deep ravine. Its massive stone walls, circular bastions, and ornate gateways reflect a blend of Hindu and Islamic architectural styles. The fort contains several historic structures, including the Jami Masjid, which features beautifully carved arches and multiple domes. There are also several large water tanks like Devtalav and Khantalav that once sustained a large garrison. Walking through the fort feels like stepping back in time, with old cannons still perched on the ramparts. The fort offers unparalleled views of the Melghat forest and the plains of Berar. Its strategic location made it nearly unconquerable for centuries. Today, it is a favorite spot for history buffs and trekkers who enjoy exploring its sprawling ruins. The eerie silence of the fort, broken only by the wind, adds to its haunting beauty. It remains one of the most significant historical landmarks in the Vidarbha region, representing the military prowess of ancient Indian dynasties.
