Gurudwara Ber Sahib, Sultanpur Lodhi

Sangrur India, Punjab, India
Gurudwara Shri Ber Sahib holds a paramount position in Sikh history as it is the very place where the founder of the Sikh faith, Guru Nanak Dev Ji, attained enlightenment. The story of this Gurudwara is directly linked to the most pivotal moment in Guru Nanak?s life. After his marriage and the birth of his children, Guru Nanak, at the age of about 30, moved to Sultanpur Lodhi and took up a job as a storekeeper. He would spend his mornings in spiritual contemplation and meditation, often taking a bath in the nearby Kali Bein rivulet. One day, while performing his morning ablutions, Guru Nanak Dev Ji is said to have disappeared into the waters of the Kali Bein. The people of the town searched for him for three days, fearing he had drowned. However, on the third day, he reappeared at a spot about 2 km away, which is now marked by Gurudwara Sant Ghat. Upon his return, he was in a state of divine ecstasy and uttered the words, "Na koi Hindu, Na koi Musalman" (There is no Hindu, no Muslim), signifying that all people are one in the eyes of God. This moment marked the beginning of his divine mission and the formal propagation of Sikhism. The Gurudwara itself is built on the very spot where Guru Nanak Dev Ji used to meditate for long periods under a sacred Ber tree (jujube tree). This ancient tree is still present within the Gurudwara complex, protected by a glass enclosure, and is a living witness to the Guru's spiritual journey. The Gurudwara stands as a testament to Guru Nanak's fourteen years of service and meditation in Sultanpur Lodhi, a period that culminated in his divine revelation and the beginning of his missionary travels, known as "Udasis."The Gurudwara's serene atmosphere and the historical significance of its location make it a deeply spiritual destination for Sikhs and people of all faiths. The sacred Kali Bein rivulet flows near the Gurudwara, and pilgrims often take a dip in its holy waters. The site has been developed over the centuries, with the current magnificent structure being built in the 20th century under the patronage of Maharaja Jagatjit Singh of Kapurthala. It is a place that offers solace, inspiration, and a profound connection to the origins of a faith that preaches equality, selfless service, and a monotheistic belief in one God.
