Gurudwara Patshahi Dasvin, Machhiwara

Sangrur India, Punjab, India
Gurudwara Shri Patshahi Dasvin in Machhiwara is a place of immense historical and spiritual significance, marking a critical turning point in the life of Guru Gobind Singh. After the treacherous and fierce Battle of Chamkaur in 1705, where he lost his two elder sons and many of his valiant followers , Guru Gobind Singh managed to escape. He was separated from his followers and was alone, barefoot, and exhausted. He took refuge in the dense jungles of Machhiwara. The Gurudwara is built on the spot where the Guru rested under a tree. He was found by three of his Muslim devotees, Nabi Khan and Ghani Khan, who were horse traders and had great respect for the Guru, and a Sikh follower, Bhai Daya Singh. Knowing that the Mughal army was in hot pursuit, Nabi Khan and Ghani Khan risked their lives to help the Guru. They dressed him in the blue robes of a Muslim fakir (ascetic), and disguised him as "Uchch Da Pir," meaning the "saint of a high order." They then carried him in a palanquin through the enemy lines, telling the Mughal soldiers that they were carrying a revered pir. The soldiers, out of respect for the supposed saint, let them pass. This brave act of his Muslim devotees highlights the Guru's message of universal brotherhood and the support he received from people of all faiths. The Gurudwara complex now stands as a monument to this incredible story of resilience, faith, and the triumph of the human spirit. It is a place that commemorates not only the Guru's escape but also the selfless devotion of his followers. The serene and peaceful environment of the Gurudwara, a contrast to the tumultuous events it commemorates, invites devotees to reflect on the immense sacrifices made and the universal values that the Guru preached. The Gurudwara's name "Patshahi Dasvin" refers to the tenth master, Guru Gobind Singh.
