Originally constructed as a school for the royal children of the Gaekwad dynasty, it was converted into a museum in 1961 by Maharaja Fatehsinghrao Gaekwad. This institution is a testament to the grand vision of Maharaja Sayajirao Gaekwad III, who was a passionate patron of the arts and global culture. The museum houses an incredible collection of personal belongings and art pieces acquired by the royal family during their travels across Europe and Asia. One of its most famous sections is the gallery dedicated to Raja Ravi Varma, featuring more than 30 original paintings that depict Indian mythological scenes with Western techniques. Beyond paintings, the museum displays a wide array of marble busts, bronze sculptures, and exquisite porcelain from China and Japan.
