How To Reach Bhubaneswari Temple

Guwahati, Assam, India
The Bhubaneswari Temple is a serene and highly revered Hindu shrine located on the Nilachal Hill, but situated approximately 165 feet higher than the more famous Kamakhya Temple. Dedicated to Goddess Bhubaneswari, one of the ten Mahavidyas (great wisdom goddesses) in the Tantric tradition, the templ e symbolizes the cosmic mother, the ruler of the entire universe. The temple offers a spiritual retreat from the busy pace of the city below. Many pilgrims consider their visit to the Kamakhya Temple incomplete without paying homage at this elevated shrine. The air is noticeably calmer and cooler, fostering a powerful sense of tranquility that complements the intense spiritual energy of the Nilachal Hills. While its exact date of origin is lost to history, the current architectural style suggests construction or reconstruction around the 17th-18th century, placing it firmly within the Ahom era's patronage of Shakti worship. The temple's primary draw, aside from its spiritual significance, is the absolutely breathtaking, unobstructed, bird's-eye view of the entire Guwahati city, the vast valley, and the majestic, sprawling Brahmaputra River. This fusion of divine tradition and stunning natural beauty makes it an essential stop. The peaceful, whitewashed structure contrasts beautifully with the green hills and the blue river in the distance, providing a perfect backdrop for contemplation and prayer. It is not just a place of worship but a historical and geographical landmark that offers a unique perspective on the region. The goddess is believed to manifest as the primordial power that creates, sustains, and destroys the cosmos, offering a profound spiritual connection to those who seek her blessings.

How to Reach

By Air: The nearest airport is Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport (GAU), located approximately 25-30 KMS from Nilachal Hill. From the airport, you can hire a pre-paid taxi or use ride-sharing services. The journey takes around 45 minutes to 1 hour, depending on traffic, and will drop you at the base or the main parking area of the Kamakhya Temple, from where you can take a local shared taxi or walk up the hill.

By Train: The nearest major railway station is Guwahati Railway Station (GHY), which is the headquarters of the Northeast Frontier Railway. It is well-connected to all major Indian cities like Delhi, Kolkata, and Mumbai. The station is only about 7-8 KMS from the base of Nilachal Hill. A taxi, auto-rickshaw, or city bus from outside the station can take you to the hilltop road. Kamakhya Junction (KYQ) is an even closer, smaller station, just 5 KMS away.

By Road: Guwahati is the main hub for road travel in Assam. The Nilachal Hill is easily accessible from all parts of the city. National Highway 27 (NH 27) and National Highway 17 (NH 17) provide excellent connectivity. You can take an interstate bus to Guwahati’s ISBT (Inter State Bus Terminal) and then use local transport. From the city, one can hire a full cab or auto-rickshaw to take them directly to the Bhubaneswari Temple parking area.

By Local Transport: Local Transport options are numerous. Auto-rickshaws and app-based taxis (Uber/Ola) are the most common and convenient way to reach the hilltop road. Shared mini-taxis (Sumos/Marutis) are also available from the base of the hill near the Kamakhya Gate and are a very economical way to travel the last 2-3 KMS up the steep hill. For a scenic experience, many visitors opt to walk the approximately 1-1. 5 KM path from the main Kamakhya Temple area to the Bhubaneswari Temple.
