How to Reach

By Air: The nearest major airport is Birsa Munda Airport (IXR) in Ranchi, approximately 150 km from Chatra. From Ranchi, hire a pre-paid taxi or take a bus to Chatra. The travel time from Ranchi is about 3-4 hours. Another option is Gaya International Airport (GAY) in Gaya, approximately 100 km away, mainly serving international Buddhist circuit flights. From Gaya, a taxi or bus is required to reach Chatra.

By Train: The nearest major railway station is Gaya Junction (GAYA) in Bihar, which is a major rail hub connecting to cities like Delhi, Howrah (Kolkata), Mumbai, and Chennai. Gaya is about 90 km from Chatra. From Gaya, local buses, shared taxis (Jeeps), or private cabs can be hired to reach Chatra. The journey takes about 2-3 hours. The second nearest railway head is Koderma Junction (KQR), approximately 100 km away.

By Road: Chatra is well-connected by road networks, including National Highways (NH-22 and NH-99). State-run buses (Jharkhand State Road Transport Corporation) and private buses operate regularly from major cities like Ranchi (150 km), Hazaribagh (61 km), and Gaya to Chatra bus stand. From the Chatra bus stand, hire local transport to cover the first 5 km stretch of the reservoir's road, and then prepare for the 6 km trek.

By Local Transport: From Chatra town, hire an auto-rickshaw or a local taxi (often a shared Maxx or Jeep) to the end of the motorable road, which is about 5 km from the site. From this drop-off point, the remaining 6 km must be covered on foot by trekking. It is advisable to pre-negotiate the fare and arrange a return pickup, especially since the final road stretch is remote. Local villagers can also be hired as guides for the trek.
