How To Reach Chabimura

Tripura, India
Historical Overview: Chabimura is an extraordinary archaeological site featuring massive rock-cut sculptures on the steep banks of the Gomati River. These carvings date back to the 15th-16th centuries and depict various Hindu deities like Shiva, Vishnu, and Durga. The site is often referred to as th e 'Amazon of Tripura' due to the dense forest and riverine approach. The lush greenery surrounding the river makes the journey as mesmerizing as the destination itself. Local legends associate these carvings with ancient tribal kings and divine protectors. Natural Splendor: The location is nestled within a deep valley where the river flows between high hill walls. The vertical cliffs are covered with thick tropical vegetation and hanging creepers. This environment creates a unique microclimate that is cool and refreshing for visitors. The silence of the forest is only broken by the sound of the boat motor and bird calls. It is a haven for nature lovers and photographers seeking untouched landscapes. Mythology and Culture: The local Jamatiya and Reang tribes hold this place in high spiritual regard. They believe the goddess Chakrakma protects the valley and the hidden treasures within the caves. Rituals are occasionally performed at the riverbank to appease the forest spirits. The integration of tribal lore with mainstream Hindu iconography makes it a fascinating cultural melting pot. Archaeological Importance: It is one of the most significant rock-cut sites in Northeast India alongside Unakoti. The scale of the carvings, especially the Mahishasurmardini panel, is a marvel of medieval engineering. Researchers frequent the area to study the style of the relief works and their preservation. The site remains a primary focus for the Tripura Tourism department for its historical value.
