How To Reach Chaturdasha Devata Temple

The Chaturdasha Devata Temple, or the Temple of Fourteen Gods, is one of the most revered and historically significant temples in Tripura. It was built in 1761 by King Krishna Manikya, after Agartala became the new capital of the state. The temple is dedicated to the 14 deities (Chaturdasha Devata) that are the ancestral deities of the Tripuri people. The idols are not conventional deities but are heads made of "Khor" (a species of cane), and they represent the indigenous faith of the Tripuri people. The temple's unique architectural style is a fascinating blend of Bengali hut-style (Ek-ratna) and Buddhist influences. The most notable feature is the dome, which is patterned after the roofs of village huts in Tripura, and is surmounted by a stupa-like structure. The temple is the center of the famous Kharchi Puja, a week-long festival that is celebrated with great devotion and pomp, attracting thousands of devotees. The festival honors the deities and the earth, and is a vibrant display of the rich cultural and religious traditions of Tripura. The temple is not just a place of worship but a living testament to the unique religious heritage of the state.

The temple is located in Old Agartala, about 5 km from the city center. It is easily accessible by auto-rickshaw or taxi.
