The elevation of Narkanda itself, at over 8,500 feet, ensures heavy and consistent snowfall throughout the peak winter months, creating ideal conditions for snow sports. The atmosphere here is generally less crowded and more laid-back than many larger, commercialized resorts, allowing visitors to enjoy the tranquility of the Himalayas alongside the thrill of skiing. This area is historically significant as one of the first places in Himachal Pradesh to promote and develop winter tourism, making it a cornerstone of the region's appeal. How to Reach

By Air: The nearest airport is Jubarhatti Airport (SLV) near Shimla, located approximately 80 KM away. From the airport, one must hire a pre-paid taxi or take a bus to Narkanda. The drive takes about 3-4 hours, depending on weather and road conditions. Booking a reliable, all-wheel-drive taxi is advisable, especially in winter.

By Train: The closest major railway station is Kalka Railway Station (KLK), approximately 150 KM away. Kalka is connected to major cities like Delhi by the Shatabdi Express. From Kalka, you can take the scenic narrow-gauge Kalka-Shimla Toy Train to Shimla, and then proceed to Narkanda by road. This entire journey is long but offers incredible views.

By Road: Narkanda is well-connected by National Highway 5 (NH5), formerly the Hindustan-Tibet Road. It is about 63 KM from Shimla and approximately 400 KM from Delhi. Direct overnight and day buses (HRTC - Himachal Road Transport Corporation) run frequently from Shimla to Narkanda. The drive from Shimla takes about 2-3 hours. Self-driving requires caution, especially on icy or snow-covered sections near Narkanda.

By Local Transport: The slopes are just 1-2 KM from the main Narkanda Bus Stand/City Center. During the winter season, the final approach road to the slopes might be snow-covered or icy. One can either take a short, invigorating 15-20 minute walk, or hire a local cab or taxi which are typically SUVs equipped to handle the terrain.
