How To Reach Dipor Bil

Guwahati, Assam, India
Dipor Bil, or Deepor Beel, which translates to 'wetland' or 'large aquatic body' in Assamese, is a permanent freshwater lake and one of the largest beels (wetlands) in the Brahmaputra valley of Western Assam. It is a significant ecological and environmental zone, earning the distinction of being Ass am's only Ramsar site, a wetland of international importance, designated in November 2002. Spanning a total area of about 40 square kilometres, a core area of 4.14 sq. km was declared a Wildlife Sanctuary by the Government of Assam in 1989. Historically, the beel is considered an abandoned channel of the Brahmaputra River. It is a critical stormwater reservoir for the city of Guwahati during the monsoon. The lake is fed mainly by the Basistha and Kalmini rivers and local monsoon runoff, eventually draining into the Brahmaputra River via the Khonajan channel. The area is a biodiversity hotspot, home to numerous species of flora and fauna, including endangered migratory birds and a large population of fish that supports the livelihood of over a thousand families in the surrounding fourteen villages. It is also recognised as an Important Bird Area (IBA) by BirdLife International. The lake's depth fluctuates dramatically from around 4 meters during the maximum flooding in the monsoon to about 1 meter during the dry winter season. The unique confluence of wetland and forest ecosystems, with the Rani and Garbhanga Reserve Forests nearby, makes it a truly fascinating natural retreat.
