How To Reach Dom-Dom Falls

Mairang, Meghalaya, India
General Details: Dom-Dom Falls is a majestic natural wonder located in the heart of the Eastern West Khasi Hills. The waterfall is renowned for its thunderous sound, which gives it its unique name, echoing through the surrounding pine forests and deep valleys. Visitors are greeted by a series of cas cading tiers that plunge into a crystal-clear natural pool at the base. The area remains largely untouched by commercial tourism, offering a serene atmosphere for those who seek peace and a connection with nature. The water originates from the high-altitude springs of the Shillong plateau and gains momentum as it navigates the rocky terrain of Mairang. The surrounding flora is a mix of dense tropical vegetation and hardy mountain shrubs, providing a vibrant green backdrop that stays lush throughout the year. The trek to the falls is an adventure in itself, passing through narrow mountain paths and small Khasi hamlets where life moves at a slow, traditional pace. This place is not just a waterfall but a sanctuary for biodiversity, housing various species of mountain birds and rare orchids. The air here is exceptionally crisp and carries the refreshing scent of wet earth and pine needles. Historically, the local Khasi people have revered these waters, often using the area for community gatherings and traditional rituals during the harvest seasons. Today, it serves as a premier picnic spot for locals and a "must-see" for offbeat travelers exploring the Nongkhlaw region. The sound of the falling water is said to be heard from miles away during the peak monsoon season, creating a rhythmic "dom-dom" beat that defines the soul of this landscape.
